Algerians obsessed with having a “male” child

November 7, 2017 Middle East Monitor 0

According to established science, a foetus’ gender is determined at conception by chromosome carried by the male’s sperm. However, this message has clearly not sunken in for many fathers of daughters in Algeria. According to some men, it is their wives that is cause. In fact, many men become so disgruntled that they may seek divorce or marry a second wife. This is the height of injustice and patriarchy. A woman in Ein Bassam (governorate of Bouira) recently reported that this happened to her, while speaking in a court. She recounted details of her life to the judge after her husband refused to pay for food to her six daughters. “My husband divorced me more than a year ago because […]

Britain says Johnson comments do not justify more Iran charges against jailed aid worker

November 7, 2017 Middle East Monitor 0

Britain said on Monday that comments by Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson about jailed Iranian-British aid worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe should not be used by the Islamic Republic to bring additional charges against her. Johnson told the British parliament’s foreign affairs committee last Wednesday that Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been teaching people journalism, a statement that the Thomson Reuters Foundation, a charity organisation for which she works, said was incorrect. “Last week’s remarks by the Foreign Secretary provide no justifiable basis on which to bring any additional charges against Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe,” a spokesman for the British Foreign Office said. “While criticising the Iranian case against Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe, the Foreign Secretary sought to explain that even the most extreme set of unproven Iranian allegations against […]

Saudi Arabia says Lebanon declares war, deepening crisis

November 7, 2017 Middle East Monitor 0

Saudi Arabia accused Lebanon on Monday of declaring war against it because of aggression by the Iran-backed Lebanese Shi’ite group Hezbollah, a dramatic escalation of a crisis threatening to destabilise the tiny Arab country. Lebanon has been thrust to the centre of regional rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran since the Saudi-allied Lebanese politician Saad al-Hariri quit as prime minister on Saturday, blaming Iran and Hezbollah in his resignation speech. Saudi Gulf affairs minister Thamer al-Sabhan said the Lebanese government would “be dealt with as a government declaring war on Saudi Arabia” because of what he described as aggression by Hezbollah. Faulting the Hariri-led administration for failing to take action against Hezbollah during a year in office, Sabhan said “there […]

Russia mercenaries operate in Syria alongside army

November 6, 2017 Middle East Monitor 0

Two men who appeared in a video posted by Daesh last month are believed to have been members of a shadowy mercenary force known as “Wagner” which the Russian army has been using to assist in its operations in Syria. The men named Roman Vasilievich Zabolotny and Grigory Mikhailovich Surkanov were captured near the eastern city of Deir Ez-Zor. However, the Russian Defence Ministry denied that any of its soldiers were missing. Yet, the men’s relatives and friends told the Russian media that they did not go to Syria with the Russian army, but as members of the Wagner group. The group is believed to have played an essential role in Russian operations in Syria. Although Russian law prohibits the […]

Jumblatt: Lebanon too weak for Hariri resignation

November 5, 2017 Middle East Monitor 0

Lebanon is too weak to bear the consequences of Saad al-Hariri’s resignation as prime minister and cannot afford to side against Iran, Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt said on Saturday after Hariri stepped down. Hariri, an ally of Saudi Arabia, said there was an assassination plot against him and attacked Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah during his resignation speech on Saturday. Hariri’s resignation thrusts Lebanon back onto the front line of Saudi-Iranian regional rivalry and seems likely to exacerbate sectarian tensions between Lebanese Sunni and Shi’ite Muslims. “I am concerned about the economy, of course, and I am concerned about politics. We cannot afford to fight the Iranians from Lebanon,” Jumblatt told Reuters. He advocated compromise with Hezbollah in […]

Turkey’s CHP supports Palestine based on 1967 borders

November 5, 2017 Middle East Monitor 0

The leader of Turkey’s main opposition party has voiced his support for establishing a Palestinian state in line with the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital. Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, according to Palestinian news agency Wafa, sent a letter on Thursday to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas marking the centennial of the Balfour Declaration, which paved the way for Israel’s establishment in 1948. The agency quoted Kilicdaroglu as saying: We welcome all efforts based on the two-state solution to create an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital This would be “the only viable and lasting solution” to end the decades-long suffering of the Palestinian people, he said, […]

Handing control of crossings to the PA ‘removes Israeli pretext for siege on Gaza’

November 4, 2017 Middle East Monitor 0

The Popular Committee against the Israeli Siege on Gaza said on Friday that handing over control of the Gaza border crossings to the Palestinian Authority removes the Israeli pretext for maintaining its siege on the territory, Anadolu has reported. “It is obligatory on Israel to lift its siege and restrictions on the crossings,” said the Committee, “and to ease the movement of goods and people and cancel the list of goods banned from entering Gaza.” According to the group’s statement, 80 per cent of the factories in the Gaza Strip have either stopped production or implemented severe cuts due to the siege. Unemployment now stands at 50 per cent and 80 per cent of the population are in poverty. “These […]

IDF ready to protect Druze town from Syrian rebels

November 4, 2017 Middle East Monitor 0

Israeli troops are ready to protect the Syrian Druze town of Khader from opposition rebels, Haaretz reported on Friday. “The IDF [Israel Defence Forces] is prepared and ready to help the villagers and prevent damage or occupation of the village out of a commitment to the Druze population,” an army statement revealed. It added that allegations of Israeli involvement and assistance to global jihadi elements in the fighting on the Golan Heights are “groundless”. The IDF statement was issued in the wake of heavy fighting in Khader on Friday morning. A car bomb killed at least nine people and injured 23 in the town, which is approximately three kilometres from the border of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. According to Haaretz, […]
